The product of an amazingly fertile collaboration between wunderkind Leonard Bernstein, a neophyte Stephen Sondheim, veteran writer Arthur Laurents and Jerome Robbins, the choreographer and 'concept man', West Side Story forever changed the dramatic landscape of American theater. Shakespeare's eternal Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, where two young lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The lovers struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice in one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
West
Side Story is as exciting today as it was when it made its Broadway debut
in 1957. Bernstein's dynamic score and Sondheim's soaring lyrics throb
with poetic urgency and unbridled youthful energy. West Side Story remains
a marvel of the fully integrated musical due to Jerome Robbins, who conceived
the show as well as directed and choreographed both the Broadway production
and the film.
Filled with electrifying dances and non-stop excitement, West Side Story also features some of the most famous songs ever written for the stage, including "Maria," "Tonight," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere," creating a transcendant fusion of realism and fantasy that is a feast for the senses.
MTD's breathtaking West Side Story will open on July 16, 2004 in the University Theater of the RTFP Building on the UNT campus with subsequent performances on July 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and August 1.
