Trial by Jury and Gilbert & Sullivan Favorites
by Gilbert & Sullivan
Show Dates: Feb 20 - 29, 2004 Join us for a special presentation of Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial By Jury paired with a selection of G&S favorites from The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, and more. Fun for the whole family - we invite you to sing along with your favorite choruses, and to enjoy hearing selected numbers from the G&S repertoire. The show begins with Trial by Jury, the delightful work that was the first product of the regular collaboration of Gilbert & Sullivan. Though called a "Dramatic Cantata", it is, in its perfect union of tuneful music and clever words, a direct forerunner of the more famous later successes of this inimitable pair, and is a delight to see. Trial by Jury is their only work entirely without spoken dialogue. Then, for Act 2 listen or sing-along to solos and choruses from many of your favorite G&S operettas. You won't want to miss this fabulous, fun production! |

West Side Story
Bernstein / Sondheim / Robbins Show Dates: July 16-31, August 1, 2004 The product of an amazingly fertile collaboration between wunderkind Leonard Bernstein, a neophyte Stephen Sondheim, veteran writer Arthur Laurents and Jerome Robbins, the choreographer and 'concept man', West Side Story forever changed the dramatic landscape of American theater. Shakespeare's eternal Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, where two young lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The lovers struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice in one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. MTD's breathtaking West Side Story will open on July 16, 2004 in the University Theater of the RTFP Building on the UNT campus with subsequent performances on July 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and August 1. The production will be under the artistic direction of conductor John Priddy, director of last season's hit, Sweeney Todd. Anne Black Scalf will be in charge of choreography with Ben Derby staging the show. The orchestra, the largest in MTD's history, will feature some of the brightest and best from the world-renowned University of North Texas Jazz program. |
